From Hundred Years of Myth to Today: Ölüdeniz
Ölüdeniz and Belcekiz Beach, known for their calmness and stillness of the sea, take their name from a myth. According to the myth, which is rumoured to have taken place in very ancient time; a ship’s captain anchors near Fethiye to meet his water needs and approaches the shore by boat. When the son of this ship’s captain goes ashore to get water, he sees the beautiful Belcekiz and they fall in love with each other. Their love continues like this for a long time. Stranded near Fethiye on a stormy day, this ship and its crew have a hard time. The captain’s son suggests that they approach the shore where Belcekiz always waits for him, but his father does not accept this. The captain’s son cannot keep his balance, falls into the sea and loses his life. Seeing this, Belcekiz jumps off the rocks and ends her life. After that day, the place where the girl died was named Belcekiz, and the place where the man died was named Ölüdeniz.
Known as Ölüdeniz lagoon, the place stands out with its smooth and clear structure due to its natural formation. Entrance to the beach, which is a favourite of local and foreign visitors with both its golden sandy beach and the turquoise blue colour of the sea, is possible in two ways. You can enter Belcekiz Beach, which is on the left side along the Ölüdeniz lagoon, free of charge, and Kumburnu Beach, which is on the right side with its fine sandy beach, subject to a fee.
While sunbathing on Belcekiz Beach, the majestic mountain you’ll see on the left is Babadağ. Babadağ is the favourite of paragliding enthusiasts and the highest mountain in the region, the highest part of which is at an altitude of 1900 meters. Depending on the weather conditions and the direction of the wind, you can enjoy paragliding from points at different heights of the mountain. If you want to spend your holiday out of the ordinary, you can try paragliding. You can get preliminary information from the businesses on the beach and learn the suitability of the weather conditions for paragliding.
Reaching the summit of Babadağ also offers the opportunity to experience a different adventure. Transportation on the mountain is provided in several ways. You can reach the summit in 30 minutes with the aerial tramway, the construction of which was completed in 2021. In addition to the aerial tramway, if you want to see the vegetation that diversifies as the altitude increases and to be in touch with nature, you can also consider the safari option.
What Points Should You Consider?
While you are paragliding, it will be beneficial to choose sports shoes as you will make short runs during take-off and landing. Another important point is to wear appropriate clothes as the mountain summit will be cooler than the sea level due to the difference in altitude. Do not forge to take your sunglasses with you so that you can have a clear view while floating in the sky. After all these preparations are completed and the necessary information is received by the pilots, you are ready to fly.
After a few quick steps, you’re in the sky. Your flight, where you will feel the freedom in the breeze blowing on your face, will take approximately 45 minutes. During this time, you can watch Ölüdeniz and the unique forests of Fethiye from a completely different perspective and witness the sights that will not be erased from your memory for many years.
Your flight will end at Belcekiz Beach. You can continue your holiday by the sea from where you left off.
